MENSA Q

Here’s some maths knowledge for y’all - and why on Earth we would do anything as stupid (completely, utterly…?) as incorporate a Fibonacci sequence into a workout. For those of you who have been at this awhile, you may have experienced the Nautilus, a workout that starts at the center of something and spirals outward. A nautilus is a natural embodiment of the Golden Ratio, a mathematical expression that refers to the ratio of two addends to their sum and each other. Apparently a cadence count over 4 confuses people.

Some might say it was this PAX’s Kryptonite. (see what I did there?) Warm Up Windmill, Imperial Walker, Steve Earle, SSH Thang 1 Circled up in a nice patch of grass for Absolution. This is an 8 count cadence. Starting in plank position to a groiner, down to chill cut, plank jack, then back up. Trying to keep the PAX together on this one seemed to be a challenge. Not to mention no one was counting except me, so I’m not even sure how many we did. [Read More]

BO 2 Yr Anniversary

BO was my first Carpex post, 4/28/16. MCants had the Q. He was so cool to me and made me feel part of the PAX immediately. 5:45rolled around and off we went, headed to school and did some warms up, 23 Merkins for Gibson. We then did so 4 corners work for Ma Bell, then we did some running work with Mary mixed in, then some dips and squats by the water fountain. [Read More]

Anniversary Kegger

April 10, 2018 It’s been one year since YHC first tasted the Gloom at FWD in April 2017, and YHC felt a little celebration was in order. But how best to mark the occasion with a touch of class and sophistication? Would the PAX prefer a tasteful platter of dry-roasted, unsalted, Whole-30-reminiscent almonds? Or mayhaps a pre-breakfast kegger? After unsuccessfully /polling the PAX on Slack (better watch your back @Slackbot) and then successfully polling the PAX on GroupMe (long may it reign), kegs beat almonds and YHC knows that the first rule of partying it to give the people what they want. A perfectly timed downtown workout (well, except for the ruckers)

After a quick disclaimer to the FNG, 15 Pax departed FUMC at promptly 5:45:01. Three ruckers went on their way. Jogged up to the bank plaza (where the new spotlights can burn through your soul) for a typical warmup (SSH, IWs, etc.), losing Callahan in the process. Jog to the south corner of Academy and Ambassador Loop to partner up. Ascending Burpee Catch-me-if-you-can around the loop to the parking garage. Riptide offered the opportunity to use the sleds, but YHC eased the minds of the concerned Pax by politely declining. [Read More]

Time to Get a Little Spooky

Click here to set the mood. Finally making it back to Slippery When Wet to pay Q respect to the site Q who bailed me out 6 weeks ago… when my 2.1 was born! I’ve been back to SWW once in the last 6 weeks, but I’m ready to execute at least part of the plan that I had half-hatched for that fateful day… with a spin. After all, today is Friday the 13th. Raccoon sighting

Friday, April 6th No we really didn’t see any raccoons but you are now reading the back blast, so that is a positive. While arriving last Friday I was greeted by an extremely chipper PAX. I think his name was Bayonne, so that is a problem. Although, another PAX that was less energetic was actually named “Chipper”, also present, so that washes itself out. I asked Earhart how many kettlebells he had in his car the night before and it was actually half of what he mentioned. [Read More]

Esse Quam Videri

For those who chose the wise route of taking a language in high school that is actually USEFUL, you might not have the Latin translation for the state motto of NC on the tip of your tongue.

Much like a yuppie JEEP owner gets excited when they finally figured out that 4x4 is not a math question, but a useful tool for “creating parking spots;” I am now equally excited to have an opportunity to share what is, otherwise, useless knowledge.

“Esse Quam Videri” translates as “To be, rather than to seem” and  YHC thinks our state motto embodies what F3 is about. It is about a bunch of fellas that have decided we want to do more than just go through the motions. We want to do more than just talk about it or make excuses for why we can’t do it. We know we can be better the more we work. We get up and push ourselves. We challenge, encourage, and grow together both in the darkness and in the light. We make an IMPACT on each other, our families, and our communities – because we want to be HIM, not seem like HIM.

This starts by simply showing up, it progresses by contributing, it thrives with leadership, and it endures with an impactful legacy.

Hi-Liter and Biner doing their good SiteQ leadership duties, encouraged some of us rookies to do more than just show up and maybe try ringing that 2nd bell. To contribute. To step up and Q.

It is easy to fall into the trap of wanting to be better/faster/stronger before making such a commitment… but leading a PAX is part of the growth.

The PAX always has your back. Just put yourself out there, know you might fall down, and know everyone starts somewhere.  So, what the heck!  Here’s what we did.

The Q

It may be the darkest and gloomiest AO in the Carpex Tribe, but 20 HIM brought all they had and lit Wolverine up for a VQ Butterscotch birthday blowout. Burt brought some Werthers to honor the moment. How sweet…. (Yep) After a few disclaimers, we ran south down Davis to the lower parking lot for a little warmup in the darkness. Fellowship pace.

Warmup

A little “do as I say not as I do” when cadence and rhythm didn’t match, but we did:

  • Hillbillies, IC??? (debatable)
  • Merkin, OMD
  • Sir Fazio, IC
  • Reverse Sir Fazio, IC

Not saying YHC had some jitters and lost track of count/cadence, but not NOT saying it either. Note: Important to make time in your cadence to actually breathe…

Either way, lots of chatter. Clearly YHC needs to step it up.

Thang 1

Head south with ALL YOU GOT to furthest light pole at Pleasant Grove Church. Then, bear crawl back to the first light pole. Alllll the way back. (75 yards)

Red Bull Smurf Jacks, aka Burtjacks.  IC x 30. No chatter now. Not even Burt. Must be doing something right.

Four Corners , hour-glass formation (no short runs)

  • Sweat Angels x 10 OYO
  • Plank Jacks x 10 OYO
  • Squat Jumps x 10 OYO
  • Wolverines x 10 OYO.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat x 3. PAX grumbling about the Wolverines, so dropped to x5 on round two. On second thought – need to save those arms….Star jumps replaced Wolverines round three.

Thang 2

Indian run back to the shelter. Two lines. Kind of.

Head to the basketball courts for a quick 5 minute workout to “Thunderstruck.”

Get the AC/DC pumping on the speaker

SSH OYO while Angus Young shreds the guitar intro, half burpee every time you hear  “Thunder” (12) Switch to plank. Merkins down on “Thunder” (11) Switch to High Knees. Squats on “Thunder” (10) Recover

Mary

Asked for a tight circle. HIM calls exercise and bearcrawls around the circle while everyone else does it. Circle got a little tighter after everyone caught on.

American Hammer, Freddy Mercuries, LBC, LSF, Burpees, etc. Hi-liter gave us some final punishment with boat/canoes to send us out.

COT

Count-o-rama, Name-o-rama.

Lamp Posts and Pickle Pounders

The day had come: YHC’s F3-aversary – 365 days since stumbling out into the gloom at SNS and earning a new appreciation of the nuances of Bond Park. To commemorate, YHC chose to Q at BO in downtown Cary. BO has become a favorite because of the variety of options it presents and how no two workouts seem to be the same. Making sure that today would be no different, we prepare to head out into the lamp post-lit gloom. [Read More]

Needle-scratch Moment

I’ve Q’d enough times (though not as much lately) that I’m not usually nervous beforehand. I was nervous today, anticipating the reaction of the PAX at what I had in store. Still, I had it on good authority that it was a worthy idea. Huh. Two minutes to go, FNG present, big PAX turnout, and aforementioned Good Authority nowhere to be seen. Well, let’s make the most of it. Warm-up Jog to Community Center lot. [Read More]
